This is an extremely rare vintage Flying V with Scorpions factory harlequin finish.  It was manufactured in the old Gibson Custom Shop in 1985.  The guitar is in very good shape, with some worming on the back of the body and a couple of small spots of discoloration on the back, probably from prolonged contact with a black leather strap at some point.  The nitrocellulose lacquer finish is beginning to lightly check in a few small areas, but is still is fantastic condition for its age.  In my life I have seen a total of three of these guitars come up for sale, and the others were in much rougher shape than this one.

I have corresponded with Gibson at length trying to get details on this guitar, and the best they can do is to tell me it was VERY limited production, since they actually have no record of how many were made, and had a very difficult time even identifying it at first.  Bottom line: it is extremely rare, probably less than 50 made.

The guitar sports two extremely powerful humbuckers, which I believe are the “Dirty Fingers” model.  These are the highest-output pickups that Gibson has ever manufactured, to the best of my knowledge.  They have incredible tone, and something else…the best word I can come up with is “authority”.  With some distortion you can call down the Apocalypse at will, but dial back the volume and you can get some beautiful clean tones.  Also, this thing sustains forever.  A guitar like this gives you command of any stage—I’ve never heard a tone like this out of a V before, both clean and overdriven.  It definitely makes an impression.

Along with the instantly recognizable Schenker/Scorps original paint job, the guitar sports the larger, more rounded headstock of the era, which also enhances the tone.  On the back of the headstock is the distinctive early Custom Shop logo.  The neck is straight and very fast—action can be adjusted just about as low as you want, and it has the very desirable pearl “small dot” fret markers starting at the 12th fret.  There is almost no wear on the frets.  Truss rod is solid and works perfectly.  The hardware is in beautiful shape, and functions flawlessly.  Electronics are also rock solid with zero issues.  This V has never been damaged, modified, or repaired, and all parts are original.  It looks like this one has lived in the case most of the time.  The guitar weighs in at around 8 lbs by my bathroom scale.  The hardshell case and adjustment wrench are included in the auction.  Case is missing the rightmost latch in front, but is fully functional and otherwise in great shape.  Please contact me with any questions and look at all of the pics—many more are available at this link:

This guitar will appreciate extremely well, and is the Holy Grail for any Scorpions fan!

You may never get another chance at one this nice.  In fact, I’m extremely tempted to add it to my own collection.  We’ll see how the bidding goes…

This item ships free via UPS insured to the lower 48 United States ONLY—no exceptions please.  Check my feedback and bid with confidence; your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed.  Good luck, and thanks for looking!
